Those who are Set Apart for the Gospel (Rom. 1:1-7)

Let us bless and greet one another, “Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God.” The title of today’s message is, “Those who are Set Apart for the Gospel.” Last week, we ended the book of John, so in the book of John, Jesus Christ calls His disciples, gives them the gospel, tells them the mission, and now, how does God guide the disciples forward? There were 120 people in total, including the disciples, as well as the 70 workers who formed the first church, and through that church, God made the way to spread His Kingdom throughout the world.
1. Me – Paul
In today’s scripture, the book of Romans, this is God delivering the gospel to Rome through Paul. But this is actually a book written even before the book of John was written, in 57 A.D. Then, there was the work where the emperor Augustine was converted to Christianity. So, through the book of Romans, may you have the grace of God to be imprinted, rooted, and natured with the gospel.
1) A servant of Jesus Christ (Rom. 1:1)
(1) Identity
People are born, not knowing who we are; people do not know what we must live for. People live without knowing the answer of why we must study and why we need to work, so our life is just wandering. If we’re not able to find the answer to those questions, we have no choice but to wander. Even Apostle Paul himself was wandering when he was in the Jewish church. He said that he was worshiping God very diligently with his own actions and following the law, but ultimately, he failed. Because he didn’t know the gospel or the righteousness of the gospel, he had no choice but to face the limitations of his life.
(2) Self-assertion, Own things ×
Everyone in this world does not know who they are, so they live their life as if they are God, and they live their lives for their own things, thinking that what they have is the best, and they live according to whatever looks best for them. They live for their own goals and their own plans, but then, when people live all of their lives, then at the end, they realize it was useless and nothing. “I’ve lived so diligently but I have nothing left to show for it. I’ve lived my entire life just to eat or sleep,” there’s nothing left. Is that life? No. Even a long time ago, Buddha was wondering about his life. The original Buddha was born as a prince and he wondered, “Why am I a prince? What must I live my life for? Why was I born as a prince?” Even one born as a prince still wanders through life. The problem is, we believe in Jesus Christ, but we don’t know who we are. Why am I living in this world? Why do I have my job? Why do I have this position in the church? People don’t know, and people wander through life wondering why they are living.
(3) Belong to master
Paul’s greeting to Rome in today’s scripture contains all of the content. Romans 1:1 says, “Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus,” after we accept Jesus Christ, we know what our identity is. If we believe in Jesus Christ, we become a servant of Christ. In other words, we become a child of God. A “servant” means that there is no need for us to assert our own desires or things. A “servant” means, I have nothing of my own; even my body itself belongs to my Master. Is that what you want? But that’s what’s happening, but you still live your life as if you’re the master. That’s why your walk of faith is twisted from the start, so I hope God’s grace will be upon you today.
I am a servant of Christ, I am not the master; I am a servant, and the servant must entrust everything to their Master. The Lord takes care of everything, this must become the start to our faith, why? Because when Jesus Christ died on the cross, the old “me” who lived as the master of my own life died with Him. Now, the new life I live is a life lived by faith in Jesus Christ Who lives in me. So, you need to know your identity from the start very well, then nothing will be a problem. You only have problems in your life because you’re being your own master; you’re only getting angry because you’re not getting what you want, and you’re getting so conflicted because things are not going the way you want, then what do you think the real problem is? The real problem is, we don’t acknowledge that we are servants.
2) Called to be an apostle (Rom. 1:1)
(1) Job
Next, Paul says, “Called to be an apostle.” The meaning of the word, “apostle” means, “the one who is sent out,” and the ones who are called apostles are the ones who did their ministry with Jesus, in other words, it’s a role or position in the church.
(2) Position in church
Why has God called you for your role, and why has God given you your role or job in the world? These are the positions and jobs that God has given you in the world and the church, but if you don’t know why God gave this to you, you will always wander. “Do I have to do this just to make a living and survive? I have a role in the church but I don’t know what to do,“ why is that? It’s because your identity is the servant, but right now, you’re acting as the master.
(3) Job in world
So even with your job, you only want to go when you want to go and not go when you don’t want to go. It’s because we don’t know what we’re living for. Our children need to know why they need to study. They need to know why they need to get a job and live in the future.
3) For the Gospel (Rom. 1:1)
(1) Purpose of life
The next thing Paul says, “Set apart for the gospel of God,” this is the goal of our lives. You must receive the grace of God to confirm these three statements in your life today. If these three statements are not confirmed in your personal life, you will always be conflicted, and even though you’re alive, you’re not really living. When faith in these three statements come into you, you will be at peace, and that is what you can relay directly to your children.
(2) Calling
If you’re not able to discover this goal of your life, then you have to live just for yourself, you’ll have to live for success, but because you don’t know who you are, internally, you collapse. There is a goal of God that you have been called for in Christ, that’s called our mission.
(3) Purpose of receiving a talent
Why did God give me my talents? God gave them to you for the gospel, then what exactly is the gospel?
2. Gospel
1) Regarding the son of God (Rom. 1:2)
(1) Through his prophets (Rom. 1:2)
(2) Promised beforehand in the Holy Scriptures (Rom. 1:2)
Romans 1:2-3 says the gospel was promised beforehand through His prophets in the holy Scriptures, regarding His Son. The phrase, “Son of God” means that God Himself is on earth as a human. We don’t believe the like the Jehovah’s Witnesses do, who believe that God the Father is higher and God the Son is lower, we do not believe that. Then there are some other religions that are being made that say, “If there is a God the Father and a God the Son, then there must be a God the Mother as well.” So, even though people go to church, if they don’t know the gospel accurately, they’re swept up by these false beliefs. Then there are some religions that say, “In order for you to pray and talk to God the Father, it’s faster to pray through the Virgin Mary.” But that’s not true; only Jesus Christ is the mediator, the intercessory. Mary also had Original Sin; she was a sinner, but if people don’t understand what the phrase, “The Son of God” means, then they’ll have all these false, incorrect religions. Put yourself in the shoes of people 2000 years ago, there was a 30 year old young adult in front of you, claiming to be God. Isaiah 53 says He had nothing good looking about him, He had nothing remarkable about Him. He looked very humble but He was walking around and people said, “That is God,” so the Jewish people thought it was a little strange.
2) Son of God
But this is the Son of God, God in human form, that the Holy Scriptures had promised beforehand. Through all of the prophets in the Old Testament, it was revealing and prophesying of Jesus Christ. This is already promised in the Bible in Genesis 3, as soon as Adam and Eve sinned against God and were separated from God, God gave them the original gospel. As soon as Adam sinned and fell away from God, God said, ‘The offspring of the woman will crush the head of the serpent.” The “offspring of woman” means that this offspring is not born out of a relationship between a man and a woman, but born of a Virgin woman alone. That “offspring of woman” would crush the head of the serpent, meaning He would overcome the authority of Satan. How could He overcome the authority of Satan? Genesis 3:15 says that the serpent will strike the heel of the offspring of woman, that’s talking about Jesus’ death on the cross. Satan was trying to kill Jesus, thinking that’s all he had to do, so he used the High Priest and Pontius Pilate, but that crucifixion actually destroyed Satan’s ability and that was the situation where Jesus Christ’s resurrection overcame the authority of hell and death. So, God was continuously telling us the covenant of Genesis 3:15 through the prophets of the Old Testament.
(1) As to his earthly life, a descendant of David (Rom. 1:3)
Then, we can divide the Son of God into physical and the spirit. Physically speaking, Jesus was born in the lineage of David, meaning that He is the Christ Who would be born in the tribe of Judah, which is the tribe of the King of Israel. So, Judah was waiting for the King of Israel to come, but there was this man born in a manger, how can He be the King? At least, He should come as the offspring of a king, shouldn’t he? So the Jewish people didn’t think that Jesus was the Messiah, but that was their misconception. 2 Samuel 7, God already prophesied that David would have a seed who would have the eternal throne.
(2) Death and resurrection through the Spirit of holiness (Rom. 1:4)
(3) Appointed the Son of God in power (Rom. 1:4)
Spiritually speaking, Christ is the One Who must die on the cross and resurrect, and He was declared the Son of God by power. When He died and resurrected, the Holy Spirit worked with power, this is impossible, to die and resurrect without the power of God. This is Jesus Christ our Lord. Jesus Christ our Lord, that is when we confess that Jesus is our Christ and He is our Lord.
3) Jesus Christ our Lord (Rom. 1:4)
(1) Jesus: He will save his people from their sins (Mt. 1:21)
Anyone can confess that Jesus is the Christ. Jesus is His name, and Matthew 1:21 says that He will be the One Who will save His people. The fact that “Jesus” means “He will save His people from their sins,” means that He has already prepared His people who will be saved. Among the nonbelievers, there are people of God already prepared. God calls them according to His plan and His time schedule. We call that, “missions and evangelism,” but if you think, “I’m going to evangelize,” that’s why you keep falling. God has already prepared salvation and evangelism from long ages past, and according to His time schedule, He is calling His people from among the nonbelievers.
(2) Position of Christ: True Prophet, King, Priest
Jesus is His name and Christ is His position or His role, that is why Jesus is the Christ. His name isn’t “Jesus Christ,” but it is that Jesus is the Christ. The “Christ” means “the anointed one,” what does it mean to be anointed with oil? It’s the position that the Holy Spirit works through. In the Old Testament, God said He would do His work through the three anointed positions, which are the kings, priests, and prophets, then what is the work that they do?
The prophet is the one who reveals the Word of God to the people of God. We must receive God’s Word in order for us to realize our own sin, and that is how we meet with God, through the Word. Second is the True Priest through whom our sins are forgiven. Third, He is the True King which means He is the One Who will overcome the enemy, Satan, and reign over us as the True King. When He died on the cross, He forgave all of our sins as the True Priest, then He went down to hell and overcame the authority of Satan, sin, death, and hell, and now is with us as the True Prophet. If you don’t know that Jesus is the Christ, you cannot be saved. By God’s grace, He will give you the faith to change, but you must be certain in this. If you don’t know who Jesus or the Christ is, then how are you going to say anything? People ask, “What do you believe in?” and you say, “Jesus,” then they ask, “Who is Jesus?” His name is Jesus, everybody knows Jesus. Even nonbelievers know about Jesus Christ, but nonbelievers don’t know what it means that Jesus is the Christ. You need to believe in the fact that Jesus is the Christ. In the Old Testament, the priests would sin, the prophets would sin, the kings would sin. They’d all fall short because they’re a shadow, they’re human, they can’t be perfect.
(3) My Lord: Ruler, kingdom
But the True King, the True Priest, the True Prophet has come. He is the Christ, he is the Messiah; His name is Jesus, and until that point, we can believe. But now, is that Christ my Lord? That is where people are unable to live their walk of faith. You need to believe that Jesus is the Christ in order to receive salvation, but then after that, you need to live with Christ as your Lord. So, if your walk of faith is not working out, it’s because Christ is not your Lord, you are still your own lord, and you can tell when you face a problem or an incident. When you face a problem or a difficulty, you’re right there, being the master, and you worry and struggle to try to solve that problem, then you’re overwhelmed, you’re afraid, you’re worried, and it’s not that you are not saved; you are saved and you are a child of God, but you are your own Lord. That’s why your walk of faith isn’t progressing. You’ve received salvation, but you’re not receiving answers in your walk of faith.
I hope every single person today without exception will believe and confess that Jesus is the Christ and He is my Lord. That is the content that the members of the Early Church believed. If that most basic fundamental level of faith is not taking place in you, then no matter how long you’ve believed, nothing will happen. The Bible says that I was crucified with Christ, which means that everything I’ve lived for when I lived for myself, is dead. Now the new life that I live I live by faith in Christ Who lives in me. Do you know why you get so mad? You get angry because you don’t get what you want. Do you know why you fight with people? it’s because they disagree with you, then what do you think is the cause of the problem? It’s not actually the fight or the problem that’s taking place, it is that you do not believe in Christ as your Lord. If you are able to correctly identify the source of that problem, it’d be great, but instead, we say, “This person is the problem, or this is the problem.” Do you think you can live a professional life like that? If this one thing does not take place for you, then your family life, your professional life, your church life will all be hard.
But there is one way for everything to work out smoothly, and it is acknowledging that Jesus is the Christ and He is my Lord. Then, if you entrust everything to the Lord, He begins to take care of everything. If the lord is my Shepherd, then I lack nothing. If I am with the Shepherd and the Lord, then even if I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil. If the Lord is my Lord, then He becomes my fortress. He becomes my shield. But we keep trying to protect ourselves with our own shields, with our looks, money, or success, but those things are not going to protect us, those will all be broken down. That cannot be your shield. Your personality cannot be your shield. Only when Christ becomes my Lord does He protect me as my shield. Even the doctors at the hospital must be worked upon by God. However, the Lord is my true healer. If we don’t know that one thing, our Lord Jesus Christ, very well, then nothing in our lives will take place. But when He becomes my Lord, that is when God’s Kingdom is established in me. Many people want to go to heaven when they die but I hope you will enjoy the Kingdom of God on earth while you are still alive, because true happiness comes from Christ. But we think that happiness comes from something else, so we go looking around for happiness, and that might give you temporary satisfaction, but it’s not going to make you happy.
3. For his name
1) One who has all authority in heaven and on earth (Mt. 28:18)
Our next generations think, “If I study really hard, this will be my shield,” but your studies cannot protect you. Today, we are beginning the book of Romans. May God’s grace be upon you. If you say, “What is this?” your life will be a headache. Look at the way that Apostle Paul’s life changed. But if that changes, then you will always receive answers. But if this fundamental change does not take place, then it doesn’t matter how diligently you work in life, it will amount to nothing. Your hard work comes later. First and foremost, you need to believe and know Who Jesus Christ is, accurately, that must be your start. For people who come to church for the first time, they might misunderstand. They might misunderstand the gospel as the way to live a good life, like a religion or Buddhism, things like that. Jesus never told us that; Jesus told us, He is life, that He will be with you, He is life. It’s not about living the way we’ve been taught, it’s about living with the Lord Who is life.
How do fish live in the water? Do they have to learn how to do that in a bowl? Do you think that birds have to learn how to fly? Do you think dogs have to be trained to know what to eat? Then how do they live? They live with the life that god gives them. God gives that physical life, and by that nature, they swim, they eat, and birds by nature they fly around and have life. How should humans live? Should we live as we’re educated? Just because someone follows a good curriculum, they turn into a good human? That’s what a religion is, but humans can never change like that. When the life of Jesus Christ comes into us, then by the power of that life, we live freely, enjoying Christ freely. That’s why Jesus Christ says, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.” Because Jesus Christ is living within me as life in the Holy Spirit, I can live freely. Romans 8 says that those who live, following the Holy Spirit, will fulfill the Law of God. So don’t misunderstand. Most people think, “If I go to church, then I have to do this or live like that.” But that’s just what humans say; the Lord doesn’t say that. The Lord says, “I will be with you, I will be with you with life, and with that life, be fully lived by God and live freely again.
So, examine yourself, when you face a problem in your family or work, how should you deal with that? Do you have some kind of good standard? Is what you’ve learned in school going to be your standard for that? Is it going to work out if you do what you’ve learned from religion? But people live with that misconception. The Lord is with you in that situation as life, we must receive this guidance. That is a Christian. So you omit the life of Jesus Christ but instead, you say, “You have to keep the law, you have to live like this based on your actions.” But that has no answers; instead must we live with the Lord, with Christ as Life, and spread that to all nations. People ask, “Where should I go? Should I go here or there?” You go according to the guidance of God, wherever He takes you, and it’s not about however strong or weak you are; you go with the power God has given you. This is what it means that we live by Christ.
If we begin to lose hold of this, then our lives become hard. Then what will be revealed is mental problems. For example, a division of your mind where even your mind cannot be united. In my heart, I don’t want to do this, but my thoughts won’t stop thinking about it, or there are kids who really want to study well, but they cannot; different things come into their brain. A divided mind, division. Because their mind is so chaotic, they become obsessed with something. Yes, they do want to study well, but their minds are so divided that they’re obsessed with something, then they fall into addiction, when your obsession becomes strong, it turns into addiction. You can fall into addictions to all sorts of things. But from that point on, you’re going to have other mental problems come in, like schizophrenia or dementia. Depression, panic attacks, bipolar, these are introductory levels; at the end, there’s dementia or schizophrenia. People get to the point where if they don’t take prescription medication, they have such a violent outburst, they cannot live in society, and this is because people are completely seized by Satan.
This cannot be solved by just putting them in jail, they want to shoot people every time they get angry, so you already have to remember that this is already affecting the kids. But what we haven’t given to kids is the freedom of life, that’s why they’re so oppressed by this. If you force your kids, “You have to live like this, you have to be like that,” that’s not going to change them. If you tell them, “Hey, if you don’t study like this, if you don’t get good grades, you cannot live,” you’re killing them with lies. Because that is the way that religions people or just how people live. We must live with Christ and we live how He tells us to live. Fish do not study the path they need to swim; they go by their nature. We must not go based on our education or studies. We must be led by the Holy Spirit of God Who lives in us. Then our spirit has freedom, and then after that, all your studies and your job comes, and after that point, you stake your life on something, you work hard, that comes later. This most important, fundamental thing first, in order for them to experience true peace and then have answers in their studies and job later.
(1) At the name of Jesus every knee should bow (Phil. 2:10)
Romans 1:5 says, why did we receive this role or position? For Jesus’ name, that name of Jesus is so important. The name of the Lord, the name of Jesus Christ, the name of President Trump, everything is contained within a person’s name. Inside of my name, Pastor Park, there is a lot of my identity. There is no evil spirit, there is no early authority that can block the will of Jesus Christ. Phil. 2:10 says that all of Creation must bow their knee to the name of Christ. May you use the name of Christ. Instead of using the name of Jesus Christ, people keep trying to elevate their own pride. If you elevate your name or your pride, then you’ll always be bound by something. I hope you will use the name of Jesus Christ that marks all creation bow down. May you use the name of Jesus Christ on yourself, how? In the name of Jesus Christ, may this blessing be upon me. When you go into your family, you cannot change anyone with your words, you need to bless them in the name of Jesus Christ. When you go to your job, before you even start working hard, bless your job in the name of Jesus Christ because everything is bound to kneel before the name of Christ. But instead of knowing this, you just work so hard.
How can your hard work overcome the disasters of the world, how can your hard work solve your company’s problems? Because solving the problem is not the issue, God’s blessing of heaven must be upon it. What’s really important is not the problems of your family being solved one by one, it’s that God’s blessing must be upon your family. That is the name of Jesus Christ. We keep using that continuously. Even during today’s worship, bless yourself in the name of Jesus Christ. Because you must receive the blessings of heaven. “I’m so great, I’m all that, I live with the blessings of earth,” no, we need to live with the blessings of heaven. Are there any people who are sick? Then bless them in the name of Jesus Christ. Then, even the sickness must kneel.
(2) His name is Immanuel (Mt. 1:23)
Is there someone who is like an enemy to you? There’s nobody who can win in the name of Jesus Christ. Do not curse people in the name of Jesus Christ, but bless people in the name of Jesus Christ. Continuously bless your children in the name of Jesus Christ. Because God works through the name of Jesus Christ; there’s nothing that can block that. God called Abraham and said, “I will make you a source of blessings, I will bless all peoples through you,” what is that blessing? That is the blessing of Christ coming upon us. Inside of Jesus Christ is hidden all the treasures of knowledge, and all creation must bow to that name. John 1:24, His name shall be Immanuel, because He is with me and with us together. So I hope you will bless the other members of the church; stop cursing at people and hating people; bless them. Then, through the name of Jesus Christ, God will begin to work; that must become our lifestyle, habit, or pattern. That’s what you call a “Christian.”
A Christian is someone who finishes everything in their life with Christ alone. A religious person might say they believe in Jesus, but they really try to elevate their own name and pride, and they try to use their power, and that’s why they collapse again and again. They said, “I’ve lived my walk of faith for such a long time; why isn’t it working?” God never told you to use your own name, God told you to use the name of Jesus Christ. Why are you talking about your pride? You should be talking about the name of Jesus Christ. Why are you so fixated on your own powerlessness? You need to focus on Jesus Christ, so that God’s power is revealed. Are you not that intelligent? That is the brain God gave you, and even your brain must be blessed by God in the name of Jesus Christ. Then, the work of re-creation will take place. The name of Jesus Christ brings about the works of re-creation. People might say this and that, but it’s because they don’t know the Christ.
(3) With those who gather in My name (Mt. 18:20)
Matthew 18, Jesus says, “When two or three are gathered in my name, I will be with them.” If anyone knows the blessing of the name of Jesus Christ and gathers for that name, then they are blessed. If there is a gathering in the name of Jesus Christ at your job, then that job will be blessed because of those people. If two or three people gather together in a region, then that region will be blessed. It says, “Call for the things in Christ,” we belong to Christ. Jesus Chris has brought us by His blood and death, we can no longer assert our own things. My money is not mine, my body is not mine, my disease is not mine, even my powerlessness is not mine; it all belongs to Christ now, and now, we live through Christ. We do not live through ourselves. But instead of looking at Christ, we keep looking at ourselves, but if you look at yourself, there’s nothing charismatic about you. Maybe even your beauty will last until your 20s, but after you go into your elderly years, you won’t even like looking at your face. Only when you’re in your 20s or teens, will you have your six pack and look at yourself in the mirror; later on, when they’re older, they don’t even want to look at themselves, and it doesn’t matter how young these young celebrities look now, everyone ages.
2) Me – What to enjoy
(1) Called to belong to Christ (Rom. 1:6)
(2) Grace and peace (Rom. 1:7)
So you can’t look at the external things, you must look at the things of Christ, the eternal things, may grace and peace be upon you. These are very important words. Grace and peace from God must be upon us. If God’s grace is not upon us, we could never understand His Word through the Holy Spirit.
3) How to enjoy peace – Faith (Eph. 2:8)
How can we enjoy peace? When God’s grace comes upon us, Eph. 2:8 says we get faith, it means you’ll start to believe that Christ is my Lord.
(1 Jesus – King of peace (Is. 9:6)
Is. 9:6 says that Jesus Christ is the Prince of Peace, and when you believe that Jesus Christ is your Lord, then His peace comes into me. If peace is upon you, how could you have panic attacks? If peace is within you, why would you suffer from addictions? If the peace of God is upon you every day, then how could you have thoughts of, “I’m going to shoot all these people,” or “Next time, I get a chance, I’m really going to break them down.”
(2) Enjoy peace through Jesus’ punishment (Is. 53:5)
Isaiah 53:5, “His punishment brought us peace.” The Lord has already taken all of our punishment, so when you believe in that Jesus as Lord, you have peace.
(3) God’s kingdom – Peace (Rom. 14:17)
Romans 14:17 says that when the Kingdom of God is established upon me, then it will be righteousness, peace, and joy.
Conclusion
1. Those who relay peace (Mt. 10:12)
So, the one who relays this gospel is the one who relays this peace. When Jesus Christ told His disciples to go into the field and evangelize, He didn’t tell them to tell the people about Jesus, He told His disciples to ask, “Do you have peace?” Everybody thinks they know Jesus because they’ve heard about Jesus, and when you go to America, that won’t get through to anyone, but ask them, “Do you have peace?” There is a difference between comfort and peace. There’s a difference between ease and convenience vs. peace. Comfort or peace is only in Jesus. When you believe in Jesus as Lord, you receive His peace. You’ve believed in Him when? Always. Even if you face a problem, a crisis, or a circumstance, if you believe in Jesus as your Lord, then you have this peace.
2. My Lord who takes care of my food, shelter, clothing (Mt. 10)
From the disciples who claimed Jesus is the Christ and their Lord, and went out to the field to evangelize, God said, “I will take care of all your needs.” That means that you are not going to work to make money, God said He has already taken care of that. God is sending you to work or school so you can spread the peace of Christ, the blessings of Christ. If you don’t know the reason why you’re going to work or school, no matter how much money you make, there are no answers. Then, let’s say later on, you gain promotions, success, and power, but you still don’t have this true answer? There’s nothing left for you to gain, so you kill yourself.
3. Those who live for God’s kingdom (Mt. 6:33)
Matthew 6:33 says we live for the Kingdom of God and His righteousness. Throughout the week, may this Word be planted within you, and may you enjoy the peace of Jesus Christ and spread it into your fields.

Benediction
Now may the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the unending love of God, and the indwelling, guidance, fellowship, and working of the Holy Spirit, be upon the heads of all the people of God, the people of all nations, and the remnants who desire to use their studies and their jobs and everything they do for the gospel, upon their jobs, their studies, and their ministries, be with them from now until forevermore always, amen.
